Google Ads · Conversion tracking

Track WhatsApp & call conversions with GTM

The complete setup, without touching your site code — then close the gap that lets bot clicks count as real leads.

Every row fired the same conversion. Only ClickSambo can tell them apart. (Illustrative.)

The setup, in three steps

Everything from the original guide — create the conversion action, wire up Tag Manager, then test and publish. No developer needed.

1
Step 1 of 3

Create the conversion action in Google Ads

Go to Goals › Conversions › Summary, click + New conversion action and choose Website. Pick the Contact goal, enter your site and scan it, then scroll down and choose Add a conversion action manually.

Name it something you'll recognise — WhatsApp & call clicks — set the category to Lead or Contact, and set Count to One so repeated taps from the same person count once.

Save, switch to the Use Google Tag Manager tab, and copy the Conversion ID and Conversion Label. You'll need them in Step 2.

2
Step 2 of 3

Wire it up in Google Tag Manager

A · Turn on the Click variables

Open Variables › Configure and tick every box under Clicks (Click URL, Click Element, Click Classes…). This lets GTM read what was clicked.

B · Find your link structure, then build the trigger

Right-click your WhatsApp or phone button and choose Inspect. The href will look like tel:+90… or wa.me/90… — those are the patterns to listen for.

Create Triggers › New › Just Links, choose Some Link Clicks, and add two rules joined by OR: Click URL contains tel: and Click URL contains wa.me.

C · Create the Google Ads tag

Add Tags › New › Google Ads Conversion Tracking, paste your Conversion ID and Label, and set it to fire on the trigger you just built.

D · Add the Conversion Linker

One more tag: Tags › New › Conversion Linker, firing on All Pages. It preserves click data so conversions attribute correctly.

3
Step 3 of 3

Test, then publish

Hit Preview, open your site and tap both the call and WhatsApp buttons. In Tag Assistant, your tag should appear under Tags Fired on the Link Click event.

Seeing it fire? Back in GTM, click Submit to publish.

That's the whole setup. Your calls and WhatsApp taps now count as Google Ads conversions.

It's firing. So why is your data still lying to you?

GTM records the tap on the button — not the human behind it. A bot that taps your WhatsApp link fires the exact same conversion as a real customer. Your report says contact; no message ever arrives.

And then it compounds

Feed those fake conversions into Smart Bidding or Performance Max and it does exactly what you asked: finds more of whoever "converted" — including the bots. Your CPA looks healthy while your budget chases traffic that will never reply.

A bot taps your WhatsApp button

The layer between the click and your data

Count the humans, not the bots

ClickSambo sits in front of your conversion signal and flags the clicks that aren't people — so the "contact" in your report means a real one. It's a Google-certified click-fraud tracker, and it works alongside the exact GTM setup you just built.

Questions people ask next

My WhatsApp click showed as a conversion, but no message came in. Why?

That's the measurement gap. GTM records the tap on the button, not the message actually sent inside WhatsApp. Bots can tap the button and trigger the signal — they just can't hold a human conversation. ClickSambo tells you which of those "clicks" weren't real.

Does this work with Performance Max?

Yes. Once the conversion action exists and the tag is live, P-Max uses it to optimise. That's exactly why clean data matters more here — if bots trigger your conversions, P-Max will happily spend to find more of them.

Should I use "One" or "Every" for the count?

For calls and WhatsApp, use One. If someone taps the button three times to check it works, you don't want three leads on the report. "Every" is usually reserved for purchases, where each transaction has its own value.

I have multiple branches. Can I track specific numbers?

Yes. Instead of a broad tel: rule, point the trigger at a specific number — Click URL contains tel:+90555… — so you can see which location's ads drive the most calls.
