What Is a Quality Score, and How Does Ad Relevance Affect It?

Updated Date:

Google’s "Report Card" for Your Ads

Why a higher score can help you save money.

Quality Score is a rating Google gives your keywords, from 1 to 10.

10/10: Excellent. Your ad and landing page are useful and relevant.

1/10: Poor. Your ad doesn’t match what people are searching for.

Why does it matter? Google rewards high-quality ads in its auction. With strong quality, you can sometimes pay less than a competitor and still appear above them. Think of it as a discount for being a good advertiser.

The 3 Components of Your Score

How Google calculates this number.

Your score is based on three components:

Expected click-through rate (CTR)Does Google expect people to click your ad? Good past performance helps.
Landing page experienceIs your page relevant, useful and easy to use, including on mobile?
Ad relevanceDoes your ad text match the intent behind the keyword?

A closer look at ad relevance: If a user searches for "red tennis shoes":

AdTextRelevance
Ad A"Buy Red Tennis Shoes"High
Ad B"We Sell Sports Equipment"Low
Ad C"Blue Trucks for Sale"None

To fix low ad relevance, make sure your keywords actually appear in your ad headlines.

The "Discount" and the "Penalty"

How Quality Score relates to your cost per click (CPC).

Quality Score is a diagnostic tool: it shows how your ads compare with other advertisers. The real-time quality that Google uses in each auction tends to move in the same direction.

RangeScoreWhat it usually means
Strong7–10Users find your ad relevant. You often pay less per click for the same position.
Average4–6There is room to improve relevance or your landing page.
Weak1–3Google sees your ad as less relevant. You often pay more to stay visible, or your ad shows less.

Simple rule: If your CPC is too high, check your Quality Score first. You may be paying for low relevance.

How Fraud Distorts Your Data

Why bots are bad for your account.

Your optimization decisions rely on click-through rate and user behavior. Click fraud distorts both:

Fake engagement: A bot clicks your ad and leaves the website in a fraction of a second. Your reports show more clicks with no engagement, which makes a good ad or landing page look weak.

Misleading CTR: Bot clicks can make an ad look more popular than it is, so you may keep the wrong ad or keyword running.

The solution: ClickSambo blocks these fake clicks, so the data you use to judge your ads and landing pages reflects real people.
