How to Set Dynamic Keyword Insertion Up Safely(DKI)

04/12/2025

What is Dynamic Keyword Insertion (DKI)?

The "Chameleon" feature for your ads.

Imagine you have a shoe store. You sell "Red Shoes," "Blue Shoes," and "Green Shoes." You don't want to write 100 different ads for every color.

DKI solves this. It automatically changes the text in your ad to match exactly what the user searched for.

User searches: "Buy Red Shoes" -> Ad Headline says: "Buy Red Shoes"

User searches: "Buy Green Shoes" -> Ad Headline says: "Buy Green Shoes"

It makes your ad look highly relevant to the user, which increases your Click-Through Rate (CTR).

How to Use the Code (The { } Method)

It’s easier than it looks.

To use DKI, you type a special code directly into your Ad Headline field in Google Ads:

{KeyWord:Default Text}

KeyWord: This tells Google "Insert the user's search term here."

Default Text: This is the "Backup Plan." If the user's search is too long to fit in the headline, Google will show this text instead.

Example: Headline: Buy {KeyWord:Our Best Shoes}

  1. User searches "Leather Boots" (Short enough) -> Ad shows: "Buy Leather Boots"

  2. User searches "Super Expensive Italian Leather Boots for Men" (Too long) -> Ad shows: "Buy Our Best Shoes" (The backup text).

Capitalization Matters

Controlling how your ad looks.

You can control the capital letters by changing how you write KeyWord inside the code.

{keyword:shoes} -> red shoes (all lowercase)

{Keyword:shoes} -> Red shoes (First letter big)

{KeyWord:shoes} -> Red Shoes (Title Case - Recommended)

{KEYWORD:shoes} -> RED SHOES (All Caps - Avoid this, it looks like screaming).

Best Practice: Always use {KeyWord:Default} for headlines so they look professional.

The Danger Zone (Safety Warning)

When DKI goes wrong.

DKI is powerful, but it can be dangerous if you aren't careful.

The "Competitor" Trap: If you bid on a competitor's name (e.g., "Nike"), and use DKI, your ad might say "Buy Nike." If you are not Nike, this is trademark infringement and can get your account banned. Never use DKI on competitor keywords.

The "Bad Grammar" Trap: If your keyword is "cheap boots" and your headline is "We sell {KeyWord}," the ad becomes "We sell cheap boots." But if the keyword is "boots cheap," the ad becomes "We sell boots cheap." (Sounds awkward).

ClickSambo Tip: DKI attracts high clicks because it is so specific. Make sure those clicks are human. Bots love clicking highly relevant ads too.
