Manually Setting Up Your Google Ads Tracking Template

Manually Setting Up Your Google Ads Tracking Template 01/06/2025 This guide is for advanced users who have chosen the manual setup option for their Google Ads integration.

It will walk you through the process of adding your unique ClickSambo tracking parameter to your Google Ads account to ensure all clicks are accurately monitored.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, you must have already connected your Google Ads account to ClickSambo via Account Settings > Connections.

This guide covers the manual setup of the tracking template only and does not replace the initial account connection needed for data syncing.

Step 1: Get Your ClickSambo Tracking Parameter

First, you need to find and copy your unique tracking parameter from your ClickSambo account.

Log in to your ClickSambo account.

Navigate to Account Settings > Domain Tracking Setup.

Find and select Option 3: ClickSambo Tracking Template.

Copy your unique tracking template URL from the screen. It will be a string of parameters that you'll add to Google Ads.

Step 2: Choose Where to Add Your Template

In Google Ads, you can apply tracking templates at different levels. You must choose one:

Account Level (Recommended): This is the easiest and most common method. It applies the tracking template to all campaigns, ad groups, and ads in your account, ensuring consistent protection across all of your campaigns.

Campaign Level: Use this only if you need to track specific campaigns differently or want to override the account-level setting for one particular campaign.

Step 3: Add the Template in Google Ads

How to Add at the Account Level

Log in to your Google Ads account.

In the left-hand menu, navigate to Settings > Account Settings.

Select the Tracking section.

Find the "Tracking template" field.

  • If the field is empty, simply paste the ClickSambo parameter you copied.
  • If you already have a template, you must safely append our parameter to the end of your existing template. This usually means adding it after the {lpurl} parameter with an ampersand &.

Example: {lpurl}?existing_param=1&your_clicksambo_parameter

Crucial Step: Click the Test button next to the field. Google Ads will check to ensure the link is valid. Review the results carefully.

If the test passes, click Save.

How to Add at the Campaign Level

In Google Ads, navigate to the Campaigns list.

Click on the name of the specific campaign you want to edit.

Go to the campaign's Settings tab.

Find and expand the Campaign URL options section.

Paste (or append) your ClickSambo tracking parameter into the "Tracking template" field.

Crucial Step: Click the Test button to validate the template for this campaign.

If the test is successful, click Save. This template will now override any account-level settings for this specific campaign.

Final Reminders

Auto-Tagging is Essential: After setup, double-check that Auto-tagging is still enabled in your Account Settings for tracking to work correctly.

Always Test: Never save a tracking template without first using the "Test" button to confirm it works. An invalid template can stop your ads from running.
