Google Looker Studio (formerly Data Studio) is a free visualization tool that turns your raw data into interactive, beautiful, and—most importantly—automated dashboards.
Here is your step-by-step guide to building your first report in under 15 minutes.
Think of it like a TV screen connected to a DVD player. The movie (data) is on the DVD (Google Analytics), but the TV (Looker Studio) displays it.
Connector: The pipe that links your data source (GA4, Google Ads, Facebook) to Looker Studio.
Report: The canvas where you build your charts.
Go to
Click the big "+" (Create) button and select Report.
You will be asked to "Add data to report."
Select Google Analytics.
Choose your Account and GA4 Property.
Click Add.
Congratulations! Your dashboard is now live-linked to your website data.
Scorecards are single numbers (KPIs). Let's add your total traffic.
Click Add a Chart in the top toolbar.
Select Scorecard (the one with big numbers like "123").
Click anywhere on the blank canvas to drop it.
On the right sidebar menu, change the Metric from "Views" to "Sessions" or "Total Users."
Single numbers are good; trends are better.
Click Add a Chart > Time series chart.
Drop it on the canvas.
It should automatically show "Views by Date." If not, drag "Date" into the Dimension slot and "Views" into the Metric slot on the right sidebar.
This is the magic part.
Click Add a control (top toolbar).
Select Date range control.
Place it in the top right corner.
Now, when you (or your boss) view the report, you can change the dates to "Last Month," "This Year," or "Last 7 Days" and every chart will update instantly.
| Type | Color | Definition | Examples |
| Dimension | Green 🟢 | The Category (Text/Time). It describes "what" or "who." | Page Title, City, Date, Source/Medium, Campaign Name. |
| Metric | Blue 🔵 | The Number (Math). It measures "how much" or "how many." | Views, Sessions, Engagement Rate, Key Events, Total Revenue. |
Rule of Thumb: If you can do math on it (sum, average), it's a Metric. If it's a label, it's a Dimension.
Click the Share button (top right).
Select Schedule delivery.
Set the time (e.g., Every Monday at 8:00 AM).
Enter the email addresses of your team or clients.
They will now receive a PDF and a link to the live dashboard in their inbox before they even start their work week.
