What is an ISP and why is it relevant to click fraud?

What is an ISP?

An ISP (Internet Service Provider) is the company that provides you with internet access (e.g., Comcast, AT&T, Vodafone). Think of them as the on-ramp to the internet; they assign your device its IP address and handle all your online traffic.

How does it help detect fraud? For us, the ISP behind a click provides crucial context about the nature of that traffic. Not all internet connections are the same. By analyzing the ISP, we can identify high-risk sources, such as:

Data Centers: Clicks originating from a data center ISP are almost always generated by automated bots, not genuine human users.

VPNs & Proxy Services: While some people use these for privacy, fraudsters use them extensively to hide their true location and identity, allowing them to bypass geographic targeting and click repeatedly.

Analyzing the ISP is a key layer in our detection process, allowing us to distinguish between legitimate potential customers and traffic from suspicious networks.
